“It's a great club that's well supported," said Doherty. "Once I spoke to the gaffer and he made it clear how much he wanted me here, my mind was made up.
"He's taken me round and the coaching staff have been brilliant. They have shown me where they want this club to be and I want to be part of that.
"I want to now get my place in the team and hopefully keep it for a season and then help keep the club in the Premiership. I don't want to be playing in the First Division and it's up to us to work hard on the training ground to ensure we stay up."
A defender at club level, Gary Doherty has made the majority of his international appearances as a striker and scored some very important goals, though recently, he has started to earn more caps as a centre half playing five games for Ireland this year at the heart of the defence.
Meanwhile, Robbie Keane is optimistic about his chances of making the World Cup qualifiers against Cyprus and Switzerland.
“I usually heal a bit quicker than expected,” he said. “I’m lucky enough to have been running and kicking a ball already. Normally when you’ve had ligament damage, kicking a ball is the hardest.
“There is no pain at all. I should soon start twisting and running and hopefully, I’ll be back in a couple of weeks.
“I’m pleased with how things are going. I never let things like that get to me anyway.”
