Cunningham advises Morrison to be Patient

Morrison battling for his place
Morrison is currently fourth choice behind Emile Heskey, Mikael Forssell and Walter Pandiani, and is concerned that a lack of first team football could cost his place in the Irish team.

“Clinton knows he has a fight on his hands,” said Cunningham. “So have all of us at St Andrews. Steve Bruce has assembled a strong squad and none of us can take anything for granted.”

“The competition among strikers is particularly hot. Mikael Forssell and Emile Heskey have been our top scorers for the last two seasons and Walter Pandiani has arrived with a big reputation. So that’s the challenge facing Clinton this season.”

“But he’s played in keeping this club where it is in the last couple of years and I hope he commits his future to the blues.”

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce insists Morrison is still very much part of his plans despite recent reports linking him to Sheffield United among others.

“We keep seeing Clinton linked with other clubs, but the fact of the matter is I’ve never spoken to anyone about him,” said Bruce. “People see the other three strikers and think Clinton is up for grabs. But he’s certainly not at the moment.”

There was some words of comfort for Morrison from Irish boss Brian Kerr who insists that he is still his No1 choice to partner Robbie Keane in the Irish attack.

“In the short term Clinton is in pole position. He’s got four goals in the group and is still the best option to play with Robbie.”

“I’d like him to play more, he knows that, he wants to play more at club level but we don’t have any control over that.”
