Croke Park opened up to real football

The home of GAA had always forbidden "foreign sports" being played there but the GAA Central Council voted by a majority of over two to one to open the ground to soccer and rugby.

Croke Park is one of the largest sporting grounds in Europe holding almost 80,000. This will offer a real alternative to the FAI who currently rent Landsdowne Road from the IRFU (rugby association).

The GAA's reluctance to open Croke Park almost forced the Irish team to play their home matches in Britain before FIFA made allowances to let them stay at Landsdowne Road.

The ban had been seen by many as a decision from another era and the financial advantages of opening the ground to other sports were substantial.

Now the ball is in the FAI's court and Ireland's football fans will wait in curiosity to see if Ireland's mammoth clash with France in September will be played in the most Irish of stadiums.
