Forest were leading the tie 1-0 when Clarke fell seriously ill. Rival managers Colin Calderwood and Martin Allen addressed the crowd to tell the fans what had happened and the game was called off. Clive Clarke the former Ireland U18/U21 international defender also won 2 caps for the senior team. He is in a stable condition in hospital.
Clarke only joined the Foxes on loan from Sunderland a fortnight ago. The 27-year-old is from NewtownmountKennedy in Co Wicklow.
Martin Allen told the Leicester website:
"Our medics were outstanding. Clive is sitting up exhausted, but very grateful to them.
"We do not know how it happened or why it happened. It would be wrong at this moment to enter into any more details until further tests have been carried out.
"But Dave Rennie and Damien Doyle were brilliant at coping with what was a traumatic and difficult situation.
"We are lucky both members of staff were on hand at such a difficult and testing time."
Leicester chief executive Tim Davies added: "When Clive went into the dressing-room he collapsed and was very seriously ill.
"This is the first time we are aware of anything happening to Clive. He was taken away in an ambulance to hospital and he did offer a few words in the ambulance.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Clive and his family, we hope he makes a speedy recovery.
"I would like to say a big thank you to Nottingham Forest for dealing with the matter so fast and to Colin Calderwood, Mark Arthur and Nigel Doughty for calling off the match so quickly."
Sunderland Chairman Niall Quinn said:
"The news filtered through to us at the Luton game and immediately our thoughts were with Clive and his family.
"We were in constant contact with the Leicester and Forest officials, who reacted magnificently in the circumstances. Sunderland AFC are very grateful to both clubs medical departments for all they have done in a very difficult situation.
"Our thoughts and prayers are still very much with Clive and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery."
