The 27-year-old right back told Sky Sports earlier this afternoon, "I am very excited about joining Newcastle, but I have got a medical and, hopefully, it will go well and I will get through it."

"I would rather not talk about it as I have to prepare for a medical. I am very excited and hopefully it all goes through."

Carr penned a four-year deal last night.

The Dubliner joined Spurs as a trainee in 1992 and had a year left on his contract. Of course he captained Tottenham last season but was obviously not part of the plans of new French coach Jacques Santini and the London club's sporting director Frank Arnesen.

Carr has made 226 Premiership appearances, scoring just seven times. He made his Republic of Ireland senior debut under Mick McCarthy against Sweden in April 1999 and brings the number of senior Irish players at St James' Park to three, alongside 'keeper Shay Given and centre half Andy O'Brien.

His international career has been curtailed by injury but the retirement of Denis Irwin soon saw him become first choice in the number 2 jersey. He last played under Brian Kerr in February in the 0-0 friendly draw against Brazil in Dublin.
