Stephen Carr has decided to retire from from international football for the second time and will step aside to let the youth take charge. Carr after the last World Cup qualification campaign in October 2005 but was brought back by Stan.

The 31-year-old hung up his international boots on Wednsday for the last time. Carr won 44 caps in an eight-year international career but missed out on the 2002 World Cup finals with a knee injury which kept him on the sidelines for 18 months. It was this injury that stopped Carr from returning to the brilliant full-back he once was. His pace and reading off the game have never been the same.

He left Spurs for Newcastle United in 2004 but he has never shown his full potential since his early days at White Hart Lane. He was regarded by many observers and anylists as the best right back in the Premiership. Hamstring problems have plagued him at Newcastle this season and he has yet to play a game since August.

Carr said to Newcastle's official website

"I feel honoured to have represented the Republic of Ireland on 44 occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed my international career.

"It's a chance now for the FAI to re-build for the future. There are many good young players that are coming out of Ireland, with the likes of Kevin Foley at Wolves, that should get the opportunity to play now."
