In a move perhaps designed to overshadow the current stadium crux, Rooney confirmed that Brazil are to provide the opposition to Brian Kerr's senior side on February 18th.
'We're delighted to be able to bring the world champions to Dublin in February following detailed discussions', announced Rooney, 'it's a fantastic match to look forward to and kicks off the 2004 fixtures with the most attractive proposition in World soccer.'
The March friendly takes place again in Dublin against the Czech Republic, ranked 11th in the world, four places above Ireland. These fixtures are part of a programme being put together by the FAI in advance of the World Cup qualifiers in the Autumn. Talks are currently underway to secure friendly games in April and May.
Manager Brian Kerr commented, 'It is fantastic to be able to bring the highest calibre opposition to Dublin. It's a great opportunity for our squad to show their abilities against the best in the world and will provide excellent preparation for World Cup 2006 qualifying games', he said.
