Aldridge, who scored 19 goals in 69 games for the Republic of Ireland, has been out of football since leaving Tranmere over three years ago.

'Aldo' became a cult hero as a player at Oxford and Liverpool before moving into management with Tranmere. He guided the Merseyside club to the League Cup final in 2000 as well as other noticable cup runs.

"These jobs don't come around every five minutes and I would love to manage an international team," Aldridge told the South Wales Echo.

"This is too good an opportunity to let pass me by, it's just so tempting. I posted my application last night."

Aldridge, who has also been linked to the soon-to-be-vacant Oxford hotseat, is an unexpected candidate but has experience of Wales having played for Newport County for five years.
